Paragliding in India: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Flight
Anshul Singh ਦੁਆਰਾ ·
There's a moment on every first paragliding flight that nobody warns you about. It isn't the take-off run, and it isn't the height. It's the second or two just after your feet leave the grass, when the harness takes your weight, the noise of the hillside drops away, and you realise you're simply... sitting. In a chair. In the sky. Most first-timers laugh out loud right about then.
If you've been scrolling through flying videos and wondering whether you could actually do it, here's the honest answer: for a tandem flight, you almost certainly can. Here's what to expect, where to go, and how to choose well.
What a tandem flight actually involves
In a tandem paragliding Experience, you fly clipped in beside a certified pilot who handles the wing, the launch and the landing. Your job is mostly to listen, walk or jog a few steps when told, and then enjoy the view.
A typical session looks roughly like this:
- A short briefing at the take-off site, plus a harness and helmet fitting
- A wait for the right conditions — this is normal, and a good sign
- A short run down a slope until the wing lifts you off
- The flight itself: gentle, quiet, often smoother than a car ride
- A landing where you'll usually be asked to stand or slide in, depending on the site
Flight lengths vary hugely by site, wing, weather and the package you book. Some are brief "joy rides" of a few minutes; others climb with thermals and stay up considerably longer. The Vendor's listing will tell you what's on offer — confirm the specifics with them before you travel, because conditions genuinely change day to day.
Popular places to fly in India
India has flying sites scattered across very different landscapes, and each has its own character.
Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh. The name most Indian flyers know. Launch is high in the Dhauladhar foothills, landing is down in the valley near Bir, and the scene around it — cafés, monasteries, other pilots swapping notes — makes it easy to spend a few days.
Kamshet, Maharashtra. A few hours' drive from Pune and Mumbai, set among plateaus and lakes in the Western Ghats. It's a favourite for first flights and for people who want to progress into learning courses later.
Nandi Hills and nearby sites, Karnataka. Easy to reach from Bengaluru for a weekend, with rolling granite-and-green country below.
Vagamon, Kerala. Grassy hills and tea-country greens, with a very different feel from the Himalayan sites.
Ranikhet, Naukuchiatal and other Uttarakhand sites. Himalayan foothill flying with lakes and pine ridges in the frame.
There are plenty of smaller, seasonal sites too, including some along the coast. What matters more than the name is who you fly with and whether the day is right.
When to go
Paragliding is entirely weather-dependent, which is why any date you read online should be treated as a rough guide rather than a promise.
As a general pattern: the monsoon months are usually a no-go across most of the country, and high-summer afternoons can get rough as the air heats up. Shoulder seasons — post-monsoon autumn and the cooler months into spring — tend to be the sweet spots, with stabler air and clearer views. Himalayan sites have their own rhythm shaped by snow and valley winds, while Western Ghats and southern sites often follow the local rain pattern instead.
Mornings and late afternoons are frequently calmer than midday. Build slack into your trip: give a flying site two or three days if you can, so a cancelled morning doesn't end the whole plan. Cancellations for weather are a mark of a responsible Vendor, not a failure.
How to choose your session
A little care at the Booking stage makes a big difference.
- Check pilot credentials. Ask the Vendor about certification and experience. Verified Outvers listings make this easier to confirm.
- Read what's included. Video and photos, transfers to launch, gear — these vary by package.
- Ask about weight and age ranges. Every wing and Vendor has limits; get yours confirmed in advance.
- Talk to a doctor first if you're pregnant, recovering from injury or surgery, or managing a heart, spine, ear or blood-pressure condition. That's a conversation for a medical professional, not a listing page.
- Confirm the cancellation and reschedule policy before paying, because weather calls happen.
Wear closed shoes with grip, layers you can add or remove, and sunglasses you don't mind securing. Skip loose scarves and anything in an open pocket. Beyond that, follow your pilot's briefing on the day — they know their site and their wing, and their instructions override anything you've read, including this.
Go with it
Almost nobody regrets their first flight. What surprises most people is how gentle it is: less rollercoaster, more slow glide over a landscape you thought you already knew.
When you're ready, browse verified paragliding Experiences on Outvers, compare what each Vendor includes, message them with your questions, and pick a window that gives the weather room to cooperate. The sky will do the rest.
