Paragliding in India: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Flight

লিখেছেন Anshul Singh ·

There's a specific moment in a first paragliding flight that nobody quite prepares you for. It isn't the take-off. It's about ten seconds later, when the running stops, the ground falls away, and the noise of your own nervous breathing is replaced by… almost nothing. Just wind over fabric. People laugh out loud at that point, or go completely silent. Both are normal.

If you've been scrolling through videos of people floating over green valleys and wondering whether you could do that — you can. Tandem paragliding is one of the most accessible adventure Experiences in India, and it asks very little of you beyond showing up willing.

What a tandem flight actually involves

In a tandem flight, you're harnessed in front of a certified pilot who handles the wing, the launch, the steering and the landing. Your job is mostly to listen, run a few steps when told to, and then sit back.

A typical session unfolds something like this:

  • A short briefing at the launch site, where your pilot explains the take-off run, how to sit once airborne, and how to position yourself for landing.
  • Gearing up — harness, helmet, and a check of the wing and lines by the pilot.
  • The launch, which involves jogging down a slope for a handful of steps until the wing lifts you.
  • The flight itself, ranging from a short joyride to a longer cross-country-style flight depending on the site and conditions.
  • The landing, usually in an open field, often gentler than people expect.

Flight durations vary enormously by site, wing, pilot and the day's conditions. Treat any time estimate as indicative and confirm it with the Vendor when you book.

Where people fly in India

India has a handful of well-established paragliding regions, each with its own character.

Himachal Pradesh — The Kangra valley, around Bir and Billing, is the name most people know, and it draws pilots from around the world. Solang near Manali also runs short tandem flights with dramatic mountain backdrops.

Uttarakhand — Sites around Nainital, Mukteshwar and the Doon valley offer flights over forested ridges and lakes, often within easy reach of a weekend-trip base.

Himachal and the north-west foothills more broadly have a cluster of smaller, quieter sites that suit travellers who'd rather not share a launch with a crowd.

Maharashtra — Kamshet, within driving distance of Pune and Mumbai, is where a lot of first-time Indian flyers start. The terrain is gentler, the season is distinct, and it pairs well with a short road trip.

Himalayan Sikkim and the North East — Flights around Gangtok give you ridgelines and river valleys, though conditions here are especially weather-dependent.

Kerala and the Western Ghats — Vagamon and nearby high meadows have a growing scene, with a landscape that looks nothing like the Himalayan sites: rolling grass, tea slopes, mist.

Timing your flight

Paragliding is a weather sport, full stop. Broadly, flying in the Himalayan sites tends to favour the stable, clear stretches before and after the monsoon, while the Western Ghats and Maharashtra sites have their own windows that often fall in the cooler, drier months. Heavy rain, strong winds and poor visibility all ground flights.

Within a day, conditions matter too. Mornings are usually calmer; the middle of the day brings stronger thermals that make for longer flights but a livelier ride.

A few honest expectations:

  • Cancellations happen, even in peak season. Build a buffer day into your trip.
  • A "confirmed" Booking confirms your slot, not the weather.
  • Pilots who call off a flight are doing their job. Take it as a good sign.

Always check the current forecast and confirm the day's plan directly with your Vendor before setting out.

Choosing a session you'll be happy with

Not all listings are the same, and the differences are worth a few minutes of reading.

  • Pilot certification. Ask what certification your tandem pilot holds and verify it with the Vendor.
  • Flight type. A short "joy ride" and a longer high-altitude flight are very different Experiences at very different price points. Know which you're booking.
  • What's included. Transfers to the launch site, photos and video, insurance cover — these vary. Confirm in writing.
  • Weight and health requirements. Most sites have limits. If you have a heart condition, recent injury, pregnancy, back or neck issues, or anything else you're unsure about, speak to your doctor before booking, and disclose it to the Vendor.
  • Permits and site rules. These change. Check current requirements with official sources and your Vendor rather than relying on older blog posts.

Dress simply: full-length trousers, closed shoes with ankle support, a light windproof layer, and sunglasses. Skip loose hats and dangling accessories.

One last thing

Nervousness before a first flight is completely standard, and it almost always dissolves within a minute of leaving the ground. Go with a pilot you've vetted, on a day the weather agrees with, and let the rest take care of itself.
