Paragliding in India: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Flight

Anshul Singh દ્વારા ·

There's a moment, maybe ten steps into your run down a grassy slope, when the ground stops pushing back. No lurch, no drop — just a quiet handover from your legs to the sky. Most first-timers laugh out loud. A few go completely silent. Either reaction is normal, and both are a good sign you came for the right reason.

Tandem paragliding is one of the gentlest ways to get properly airborne in India, and you don't need any experience, special fitness training, or prior adventure credentials to try it. Here's an honest look at what the day involves.

What a tandem flight is actually like

You fly strapped into a harness beside a certified tandem pilot, under a single wing. The pilot handles the launch, the steering and the landing. Your job is mostly to listen, run when asked, and then enjoy the view.

A typical session runs something like this:

  • A short briefing. The pilot explains the run-up, how to sit back into the harness once airborne, and what to do with your legs on landing.
  • Gearing up. Harness, helmet, and a check of the lines and wing. Watch this part — a careful pre-flight check is one of the clearest signals of a conscientious Vendor.
  • The launch. A few steps down a slope into the wind. It's far less dramatic than it looks in videos.
  • The flight. Once you're up, the harness becomes a chair. You're sitting, not dangling. Pilots often take a wide, mellow line for first-timers, and many will offer a gentle spiral turn near the end — you can absolutely say no thank you.
  • The landing. Usually a soft approach into an open field, with a short jog or a seated touchdown.

Flight lengths vary enormously by site, season and conditions, so treat any duration mentioned in a listing as a plan rather than a promise. Weather calls the shots, always.

Where people fly in India

A handful of regions have become reliable homes for tandem flying, each with its own character:

  • Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh. The best-known name in Indian paragliding, with a high launch and a valley landing site. It draws pilots from across the world and has the deepest bench of experienced tandem pilots.
  • Kamshet, Maharashtra. A cluster of plateau sites within a few hours' drive of Mumbai and Pune. Rolling, green and forgiving — a popular first flight for city weekenders.
  • Nandi Hills and around Bengaluru, Karnataka. Short, scenic flights close to a major city, weather permitting.
  • Manali and the Kullu valley, Himachal Pradesh. Shorter hop-style flights with mountain backdrops, often bundled into wider trips.
  • Vagamon, Kerala. Grassy highlands that host flying during the right windows, with a very different, misty-green feel.
  • Sikkim and parts of Uttarakhand. Smaller scenes, often stunning, and worth checking current access and permit rules before you plan around them.

Weather windows, in general terms

Paragliding is a weather sport first and an adventure sport second. Broad patterns are worth knowing, but conditions on the day decide everything.

In the Himalayan sites, the autumn and spring shoulder seasons are generally the most sought-after, when the air tends to be stable and the visibility good. Deep winter can bring cold and snow at launch; the monsoon months usually shut flying down across most of the country. In the Western Ghats, the post-monsoon stretch into the cooler months is the usual window, with the landscape at its greenest early on.

Within a day, mornings and late afternoons are often calmer, while midday can get thermally and bumpy. Many Vendors schedule beginners into the gentler slots for exactly this reason.

The honest advice: build a buffer day into your trip. Flights get postponed, and a Vendor who cancels for weather is doing their job properly.

How to choose a session

  • Check pilot credentials. Ask the Vendor directly about tandem certification and experience at that specific site.
  • Read the listing carefully. Understand what's included — gear, transfers to launch, and whether video or photos are part of the package or added separately.
  • Ask about weight and age ranges. These vary by wing and by site.
  • Talk to a doctor if you're pregnant, recovering from surgery, or managing a heart, back, spine or ear condition. Don't self-assess.
  • Clarify the weather policy before Booking: what happens if the flight is called off, and whether you can reschedule.
  • Dress for the launch, not the valley. Closed shoes with grip, layers, sunglasses, and nothing loose in your pockets.

Check current weather, access and permit rules with official sources before you travel, and confirm every detail with your Vendor in the days before your flight.
