Paragliding in India: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Flight
Anshul Singh എഴുതിയത് ·
There's a strange, quiet moment just after your feet leave the hill. The running stops, the ground drops away, and the wing settles overhead with a soft sigh. Most first-timers expect a stomach-lurch. What they usually get instead is silence, a wide view, and the odd realisation that they're simply sitting down in mid-air. If paragliding has been on your list for a while and you've never done it, a tandem flight is the easiest, gentlest way in.
What a tandem flight actually involves
Tandem means you fly with a trained pilot. You're clipped into a harness in front; the pilot sits behind, handles the wing, and makes every decision. Your job is small and specific: listen to the briefing, and when the pilot says run, run — and keep running until the hill is no longer under you.
A typical session unfolds roughly like this:
- A short briefing on posture, the harness, and what to do at launch and landing
- Gearing up, with the pilot checking your harness and helmet
- Waiting — sometimes a while — for the air to be right
- The launch run, which is over in seconds
- The flight itself, usually a smooth glide with the valley unfolding below
- A landing where the pilot does the work and you follow their cue
Flight lengths vary a lot by site, wing, conditions and the package you've booked. Some are short "joy rides" down from a launch point; others are longer cross-country style flights that use rising air to stay up. Confirm what you're getting with the Vendor before you book, because "paragliding" can mean very different things at different sites.
Where beginners usually fly in India
India has a handful of regions that have become genuinely established for tandem flying, mostly because of reliable terrain and wind patterns rather than marketing.
Himachal Pradesh — The Kangra valley, around Bir and Billing, is the name most people know. It's a serious flying region with a long season of interest to experienced pilots, and tandem flights are widely available. Solang near Manali is another Himachali option, usually shorter and very scenic.
Himalayan foothills in Uttarakhand — Sites around Mussoorie, Nainital and the Doon valley offer flights with pine-covered ridges and river valleys below. Good if you're already heading to the hills for a trek or a road trip.
Western India — Kamshet, within a few hours' drive of Pune and Mumbai, is the classic weekend introduction. Rolling Sahyadri plateaus, friendly launch sites, and a strong culture of training. Panchgani and parts of the Western Ghats also see tandem activity.
South India and the coast — Flights near Vagamon in Kerala, Nandi Hills in Karnataka, and coastal spots in Goa and around the Konkan give you a different texture altogether: lateritic plateaus, tea country, or the sea on one side.
Sikkim and the Northeast — Gangtok and surrounding ridges offer flights with Himalayan backdrops, with a shorter and more weather-dependent window.
Seasons and weather windows
Paragliding is entirely at the mercy of air. Monsoon months are generally off the table across most of the country, and the Himalayan sites close during heavy winter weather. Broadly, the dry, stable stretches of autumn and spring are the sweet spots for Himalayan flying, while the Western Ghats and southern sites tend to work best in the cooler, post-monsoon to early-summer months.
That's a guideline, not a promise. Conditions change year to year, and a site can be flyable one morning and grounded by afternoon. Always check the current forecast and confirm with your Vendor close to your travel date — and accept that a cancelled flight is a sign of good judgement, not bad luck.
How to choose a session
A few things worth sorting out before you pay:
- Pilot credentials. Ask what certification the pilots hold and how experienced they are at that specific site.
- What's included. Flight duration, photos or video, transfers to the launch point, and whether a reflight is offered if weather cancels your slot.
- Weight and health conditions. Most tandem setups have weight ranges. If you have any heart, back, pregnancy or mobility concerns, speak to your doctor first — don't rely on a checklist online.
- Time of day. Morning and late-afternoon air often behaves differently from midday. Your Vendor will know what suits their site.
- Cancellation terms. Weather cancellations are common. Know in advance what happens to your Booking.
Wear closed shoes with grip, dress warmer than you think you need for altitude, and leave loose items behind. Don't plan a tight onward schedule the same day — waiting for a weather window is part of the sport.
