Paragliding in India: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Flight

Anshul Singh ਦੁਆਰਾ ·

There's a strange, quiet moment just before your first paragliding flight. You're standing on a grassy slope with a harness snug around your thighs, a pilot behind you checking lines, and a valley falling away in front of your shoes. Then you run — a few clumsy steps, maybe four or five — and the ground simply stops being there. No lurch, no drop. Just air, and the sound of wind on fabric.

Almost everyone expects that moment to be terrifying. Almost nobody finds it so. Here's what a first tandem flight in India is really like, and how to choose one well.

What "tandem" actually means

A tandem paragliding Experience means you fly strapped into a two-person harness system with a trained pilot who handles the wing, the launch, the steering and the landing. You are, essentially, a passenger with a very good view. You don't need prior experience, you don't need to be athletic, and you don't need to remember a checklist.

Your job is small but real:

  • Walk or jog forward when the pilot says go, and keep going until your feet leave the ground
  • Sit back into the harness once you're airborne (the pilot will tell you when)
  • Stretch your legs out for landing when instructed

That's genuinely it. Most Vendors run a short briefing on the ground before launch and will walk you through their own procedure — listen to that briefing rather than anything you've read online, including this.

Flights are usually described as "joy rides" (short, low, quick hops) or longer "cross-country" or "high" flights that gain altitude and stay up considerably longer. First-timers often do well with a mid-length flight: long enough to stop gripping the harness and actually look around, short enough that you're not sitting in cold air wondering when it ends.

Where people fly in India

India has an unusual range of flying terrain, and each site has its own personality.

Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh — The best-known name in Indian paragliding, with a high launch above Billing and a landing meadow near Bir. Long flights, big Himalayan backdrops, and a whole small-town ecosystem of cafés and flying schools built around it.

Kamshet, Maharashtra — A few hours from Pune and Mumbai, set among Sahyadri plateaus and lakes. Gentle, green and very popular for first flights, especially in the post-monsoon months when the hills are still glowing.

Kunjapuri and the Rishikesh belt, Uttarakhand — Short, scenic flights over Shivalik foothills, often combined with rafting or camping into a single weekend.

Nandi Hills and around Bengaluru, Karnataka — Accessible flying for South India, usually shorter hops with wide plains views.

Vagamon, Kerala — Rolling green meadows and a very different, softer landscape from the Himalayan sites.

Sikkim, Manali and parts of the Northeast — Smaller scenes, dramatic terrain, and worth exploring once you've flown at least once elsewhere.

Timing your flight

Paragliding is entirely at the mercy of weather, and that's a good thing — it means flying gets called off when conditions aren't right.

Broadly, the Himalayan sites fly best in the shoulder seasons on either side of the monsoon, with clear skies and stable air. Western Ghats sites like Kamshet come alive after the rains, through the cooler months. Monsoon generally shuts flying down almost everywhere, and deep winter can close high-altitude launches.

Within a day, mornings tend to be calmer and afternoons more thermally active. Vendors will pick a slot based on that day's conditions, not your preference — so build a buffer day into your trip if flying is the whole point of it. Weather forecasts and site conditions change constantly; confirm the current window directly with your Vendor before you travel, and check whether any local permissions or site rules apply at the time of your visit.

Choosing a session (and a Vendor)

A few things worth checking before you confirm a Booking:

  • Pilot certification. Ask what certification the tandem pilots hold and with which body. A good Vendor answers this without hesitation.
  • Flight duration and launch height. "10 minutes" and "25 minutes" are very different experiences at very different price points.
  • What's included. Transport to launch, gear, briefing, and whether photos or video are extra.
  • Weather policy. What happens if your slot is cancelled — reschedule, refund, or credit?
  • Weight and health considerations. Most sites work within a weight range. If you have a heart condition, back or neck issues, are pregnant, or have recently had surgery, speak to your doctor first and disclose it to the Vendor.

Wear closed shoes with ankle support, layer up (it's colder aloft), and skip the loose sunglasses and dangling bags.

Ready to leave the ground?

The best part of a first flight isn't the adrenaline — it's how calm it is. Browse verified paragliding Experiences on Outvers, compare durations and sites, and message the Vendor to confirm timings and conditions before you go. The valley will still be there. You just get to see it differently.
